The Narrative Character of Ethics and Law
The Narrative Character of Ethics and Law
Thursday, June 24 - 3:00 - 4:15 p.m.
Buie Seawell, University of Denver
The presentation will describe what “Narrative Ethics” is and how this developing approach to ethical inquiry is so appropriate for understanding the relationship between ethics and law. The links between story, Social Contracts, and The Law will be developed. As well, several “dramas of the law” (A Man for All Seasons, Antigone, Gandhi) will be woven into the presentation (via DVD clips), and used to illustrate how narrative approaches to law mitigate the classic and historic conflicts between Natural Law and Positive Law, as well as the ever-contentious conflict of Strict Construction vs. Judicial Activism.
